Open AI entry into India’s Advertising Market: Is it reset or new channel?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in India on August 27, 2026, entering the rapidly growing advertising market. As a new entrant, OpenAI faces several limitations. Ads appear below relevant ChatGPT responses, clearly labeled, with separate sponsored placements offering limited visibility. This is due to only logged-in adults aged 18 and above with a free subscription can view these ads.

Advertisers can access performance metrics like clicks and impressions but have minimal access to user data for marketing purposes. Indian decision-makers, primarily from the FMCG and e-commerce sectors, do not yet use OpenAI as their primary app, unlike Google, which dominates the search market with about 90% share. Reaching a broad audience remains a significant challenge.

Performance measurement does not undergo thorough testing or exploration as it does with Meta and Google, who have excelled in this area for years. OpenAI does not yet prepare for a structural reset. For this to happen, conversational AI must become a default research surface, and ads must demonstrate incremental sales without eroding trust—a decision not yet made.

In 2026, OpenAI can serve as a new channel to explore incrementally through agency-led pilots and low-cost self-serve options. By 2027, it could become a meaningful intent/discovery channel if it achieves usage and conversion to manage search effectively.

Therefore, I suggest viewing this as a high-intent channel entering a crowded advertising landscape in India. Let’s avoid prematurely labeling it as a structural reset or dismissing it as irrelevant. Instead, let’s carefully monitor this space and allocate some budget to build a solid foundation as it gains traction in the future.
